Former Wolves Captain Conor Coady Announces Retirement at 33

The former England international and Wolves legend has officially retired after a career spanning 503 matches and eight professional clubs.

Conor Coady has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. The former England defender shared the news via an emotional social media post on Friday morning, just moments before Thomas Tuchel named his latest national squad. Coady, who most recently played for Charlton under Nathan Jones, ends a career that included 503 appearances and 10 caps for his country.

Coady’s journey began in the Liverpool academy, where he was once compared to Steven Gerrard. After spells with Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town, he found his true home at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Signed by Kenny Jackett in 2015, Coady became a central figure in the club's rise, eventually captaining the side to Premier League promotion and a memorable run to the Europa League quarter-finals.

The defender made 317 of his career appearances for Wolves, scoring seven goals for the Molineux club. Following his long stint in the Midlands, he spent time on loan at Everton before joining Leicester City for a reported £8.5 million. His final chapters as a player included a short stay at Wrexham and a loan move to The Valley to represent Charlton.

"Football is my life. It always has been. But everything at some point always comes to an end."

A New Path in Coaching

Coady has already begun transitioning into life after playing. He joined Lee Carsley’s England Under-21 coaching staff in September and has also been linked with an assistant head coach position at Barnsley. His retirement post drew tributes from several former teammates, including Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish, and Raheem Sterling, who referred to Coady as his captain.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate also praised the defender's career, recalling their first meeting when Coady was just 16 years old. Current Wolves stars like Kieran Trippier and former teammates such as Raul Jimenez and Nelson Semedo also sent their well-wishes to the departing skipper.

"You've had a fabulous career and you should all be proud."
