América Cling to Top Spot After Penalty Drama Against Toluca

América Cling to Top Spot After Penalty Drama Against Toluca

Club América remains atop the Liga MX standings following a frantic 2-2 draw featuring two red cards and two late penalties at the Estadio Azteca.

A chaotic night at the Estadio Azteca saw Club América maintain their position at the summit of Liga MX, despite a frustrating 2-2 draw against Toluca. In a match that exploded into life during the final minutes, the Eagles relied on a late Henry Martín penalty to rescue a point and stay ahead of their rivals on goal difference.

The first half was largely a cagey affair, with Toluca setting up a deep defensive block that stifled the hosts. Despite América controlling possession, they were stunned in the 41st minute when Federico Viñas outmuscled Santiago Bueno. The Uruguayan striker turned his marker and fired a powerful left-footed shot past Luis Malagón. Out of respect for his former club, Viñas chose not to celebrate the opening goal.

Second Half Turnaround

Seeking a spark, América manager Guillermo Almada introduced Miguel Borja after the break, while Toluca’s Antonio Mohamed brought on Alexis Vega and Paulinho. The tactical shifts paid off for the hosts in the 61st minute. Following a cross from Israel Reyes and a scramble in the box, Henry Martín managed to poke the ball home, igniting the home crowd.

The match seemed destined for a draw until a frantic closing sequence. Santiago Bueno’s difficult night ended with a red card after he fouled Paulinho inside the area. Although Malagón saved the subsequent penalty from Alexis Vega, the rebound fell perfectly for the Toluca man to head into an empty net, seemingly clinching a late victory for the visitors.

However, the drama was far from over. In stoppage time, Miguel Borja was brought down in the opposite box. Referee Luis Enrique Santander awarded another penalty and dismissed Toluca’s Federico Pereira for a second bookable offense. Henry Martín stepped up to convert the spot-kick emphatically, securing his second goal of the night and ensuring América salvaged a point from a thriller.
