Trent Alexander-Arnold faces uncertainty at Madrid as third-choice right-back

The England international has seen his playing time vanish under Jose Mourinho as competition for the right-back slot intensifies.
The high-profile move of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid is currently facing its most difficult period. Despite arriving in Spain with the goal of becoming a permanent fixture in the starting lineup, the 28-year-old now finds himself as the third-choice option for the right-back position. The situation has shifted significantly following a summer of changes at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The arrival of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan has increased the pressure on the squad, but it is the tactical shift by manager Jose Mourinho that has most affected Alexander-Arnold. Mourinho has recently preferred using midfielder Fede Valverde in the defensive role, leaving the former Liverpool star on the sidelines for several crucial fixtures.
A season of limited opportunities
Statistically, the current campaign has been underwhelming for the defender. Out of 13 matches played by the club this season, Alexander-Arnold has featured in only seven, with just four starts to his name. His only goal contribution so far was an assist during a 4-0 victory against Malaga. Most concerning for the player is his lack of involvement in recent weeks, having failed to see any action against Roma, Sevilla, or RB Leipzig.
"I decided that right now, the move was to change up the midfield and put Fede in there."
Jose Mourinho
The manager explained that while he dislikes making players feel excluded, the needs of the collective must come first. Mourinho noted that both Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries were professional when informed that recent selections were tactical decisions aimed at benefiting the team's overall balance.
This struggle for consistency follows a debut season marred by hamstring and thigh injuries. Alexander-Arnold’s time in Madrid has also been complicated by frequent managerial changes, having already played under Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa before Mourinho's arrival. With a contract running until 2031, the club's long-term plan for the defender remains unclear.
"I think he made a big mistake going to Madrid. We've definitely missed his creativity."
Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher suggested that the move may have been an error, noting that his former club misses the right-back's creative output. As the January window approaches, questions regarding Alexander-Arnold's future in the Spanish capital continue to grow.
