Charlyn Corral Makes History as First Mexican to Win Ballon d'Or Honor

Pachuca striker Charlyn Corral has become the first Mexican player to receive an award at the prestigious Ballon d'Or gala in Paris.

Pachuca forward Charlyn Corral has secured her place in the history books by becoming the first Mexican player, male or female, to be honored at the Ballon d'Or ceremony. During the gala held on Monday night, the veteran striker was awarded the Gerd Müller Trophy, recognizing her as the most prolific goal-scorer in women's football for the 2025/26 period.

The 35-year-old’s triumph follows a remarkable 2026 season where she maintained a sensational scoring rate of one goal per game. Corral netted 49 times in 49 appearances, consisting of 36 goals for her club and 13 for the Mexican national team. Her clinical finishing allowed her to beat out other top contenders, including Ewa Pajor and Katie Wilkinson, for the prestigious prize.

A Lifetime of Goals

Corral’s journey to the stage in Paris comes after more than twenty years in the sport. Before returning to Mexico, she built a strong reputation in Spain’s Liga F with successful spells at Levante and Atlético Madrid. Her recent domestic form was vital in leading Pachuca to the Liga MX Femenil Clausura 2025 title, while she also secured her fifth individual Golden Boot as the league's leading scorer.

The award was presented by Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer and actress Sophie Turner. In the men's category, the Gerd Müller Trophy went to Harry Kane, who also took home the main Ballon d'Or. Corral used the moment to praise the growth of the game in Mexico, highlighting her compatriot Scarlett Camberos, who was also among the 30 nominees for the Women's Ballon d'Or.

"I’m incredibly happy to be here and to be the first Mexican to receive this recognition."

This landmark achievement came just one day after Corral proved her class once again, scoring a hat trick in Pachuca’s 5-0 win over Necaxa. By breaking this barrier at the gala, Corral has set a new benchmark for Mexican talent on the global stage.
