Arsene Wenger: African World Cup Glory is Achievable

FIFA's Arsene Wenger believes data shows African teams are ready to win the World Cup after a strong performance in 2026.
At the recent CAF Strategic Conference in Cape Verde, football leaders gathered to evaluate the performance of African nations during the 2026 World Cup. FIFA Chief of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger, highlighted that nine out of ten African teams successfully progressed from the group stages, marking a significant milestone for the continent.
Building on Tactical Progress
"We want to see an African team win the World Cup, and the data shows that this is achievable."

Wenger noted that improved tactical discipline and organization were key to this success, though he acknowledged that minor margins often decided knockout matches. He emphasized that while data points toward progress, African teams must continue to develop their psychological quality and unity to bridge the remaining gap.
"In this World Cup, it was difficult to beat any African team because their discipline and organization reached top levels."

Experts at the conference, including Otto Addo and Arron Ackerman, suggested that teams should focus on higher pressing and more aggressive movement into the penalty area. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe echoed the sentiment, expressing his firm belief that an African nation will soon become world champions.
