UEFA Investigates Alleged Spitting Incident During Nations League Match

European football's governing body has launched a disciplinary probe following claims an Irish staff member was spat at during a match against Israel.

UEFA has officially opened a disciplinary investigation into an alleged spitting incident that occurred during the recent Nations League encounter between the Republic of Ireland and Israel. The match, held behind closed doors in Backa Topola, Serbia, was marred by reports that Ireland’s head of athletic performance, Damien Doyle, was spat on by an Israeli player as the teams headed to the tunnel at halftime.

Tensions boil over in Serbia

The Israeli Football Association has formally denied the accusations, stating that no such action took place. Meanwhile, Israel’s head coach, Ran Ben-Shimon, claimed he was in his dressing room during the interval and did not witness any altercation. UEFA confirmed that an ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to review the match officials' reports and investigate potential player misconduct.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson praised his squad for maintaining their composure throughout the match, despite what he described as deliberate attempts by the opposition to intimidate his players. Hallgrímsson, who suggested that UEFA should avoid pairing the two nations in future draws, noted that his team successfully navigated several provocations to avoid unnecessary disciplinary trouble.

The fixture was played amidst a backdrop of significant geopolitical tension, with the Football Association of Ireland facing domestic pressure to boycott the games. The match itself saw further friction, including a clash at full-time, continuing a series of controversial events surrounding this Nations League double-header.
