Erik ten Hag warns Manchester United face genuine relegation battle

Former manager Erik ten Hag admits that Manchester United could face relegation as the club sits 17th in the Premier League table.
Manchester United’s current crisis has reached a point where even former staff are discussing the possibility of the club losing its top-flight status. Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed by the club in 2024, has warned that the Red Devils are facing a genuine threat of relegation from the Premier League.
The club currently occupies 17th place in the table, sitting outside the bottom three only by virtue of goal difference. Their recent form has been dismal, suffering three consecutive defeats, the latest of which came against Chelsea. In that match, United finished with ten men, further increasing the scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick.
A Vicious Circle
Ten Hag, who led the team to two domestic trophies during his tenure, believes that the strength of the English top flight makes any slip-up dangerous. Speaking in a recent interview, he suggested that once a team enters a downward spiral, finding a way out becomes increasingly difficult.
"In the Premier League it's certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong."

The statistics paint a bleak picture for the Manchester club. They have managed just a single victory in their opening nine league fixtures—a win against newly-promoted Ipswich Town. This represents their worst start to a season in decades; the club has not been in such a precarious position this late in a campaign since 1986, during the transition from Ron Atkinson to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Michael Carrick, who took the permanent role in the summer after a 15th-place finish in 2025, remains defiant despite the pressure. He is currently at risk of becoming the third manager to be let go by the Ineos leadership in just over two years. Carrick maintains that the only solution is to focus on securing points rather than dwelling on the league table.
"We've got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that."

The road ahead does not get any easier for the struggling giants. Their upcoming schedule includes a clash with Aston Villa followed by a difficult trip to face Liverpool. If results do not improve quickly, the "vicious circle" mentioned by Ten Hag could become a reality for one of the world's most successful clubs.
