End of an Era: San Siro to be Demolished by 2031

End of an Era: San Siro to be Demolished by 2031

Milan's historic football cathedral will be razed to the ground to make way for the new 71,500-seat Generali Stadium.

One of the most revered landmarks in world football is entering its final chapter. The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, universally known as San Siro, is officially scheduled for demolition by 2031. The announcement comes as both AC Milan and Inter Milan move forward with plans to build a state-of-the-art replacement right next to the existing site.

The historic venue, which has stood for nearly a century, will remain operational while the new 'Generali Stadium' is constructed. Demolition is expected to begin once the new arena is fully functional, likely between 2031 and 2032. The project is a collaboration between the two Serie A giants and the local government, aiming to provide a modern home ahead of the 2032 UEFA European Championships.

A Futuristic Replacement

The new stadium will feature a capacity of 71,500, including 13,000 VIP seats. Designed by architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA, the structure is inspired by Milan’s famous Duomo cathedral, featuring a concrete X-frame and a sweeping double-curved roof. The site will also house a shopping mall, hotel, and medical center. Italian insurance firm Generali has secured the naming rights in a massive 20-year deal worth approximately £540 million.

Despite the promise of modern luxury, including a transparent players' tunnel and an LED facade that changes colors, the project has faced significant backlash. Many supporters have criticized the design on social media, mockingly comparing the oval structure to a washing machine or an air fryer. During the official launch, Inter fans protested with banners reading: "You will never extinguish the lights of San Siro."

Opened in 1926, San Siro has hosted two World Cups and four European Cup finals. Its steep stands have been graced by legends such as Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, and Ronaldo. While the new Generali Stadium aims to usher in a new era for Milanese football, many fans fear the unique soul of the game's original cathedral will be lost forever.
