PSG title defense rocked as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffers season-ending ACL tear

Paris Saint-Germain's ambitions for a third consecutive Champions League crown have been dealt a devastating blow. The club has officially confirmed that star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Tuesday's European clash.

The injury occurred just before the hour mark in PSG's 4-2 victory over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes. Following a challenge with Xavi Espart, the 25-year-old was unable to walk and had to be assisted from the field by medical staff. The French champions announced on Wednesday that the Georgian international will undergo surgery in the coming days.

A massive void in the attack

Losing Kvaratskhelia is a significant setback for the reigning champions. Since his arrival from Napoli in January 2025, he has been a cornerstone of the side that won back-to-back Champions League titles. Last season’s best player in the competition and a current 2026 Ballon d'Or nominee, his absence leaves a major gap in Luis Enrique's tactical plans.

"I know I have to come back stronger for my people who always have my back."

The victory over Barcelona proved to be a costly one for the Ligue 1 giants. In addition to Kvaratskhelia, captain Marquinhos and current Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembele also sustained thigh injuries. While those two are expected to return within a few weeks, the manager admitted the situation is far from ideal.

"The three injuries is the worst part of the game today."

Despite the personnel crisis, PSG remains at the top of the Champions League table with a perfect record after three matches. Goals from Desire Doue, Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha, and Fabian Ruiz secured the win on Tuesday, but the focus now shifts to how the team will cope without their most influential winger for the remainder of the campaign.
