Napoli hit 23-year low after historic defeat to Venezia

Napoli suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to winless Venezia, marking their worst start to a season in over two decades.
Napoli's difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign hit a new low on Saturday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against bottom-placed Venezia. The loss at Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo marks the first time since the 2001/02 season that the club has lost five of their opening nine matches across all competitions.
A historic struggle
The decisive moment arrived in the 49th minute when Akor Adams found the net, securing Venezia's first Serie A win of the season. Despite dominating the match with 29 shots and an expected goals tally of 2.44, Napoli failed to equalize, most notably when Kevin De Bruyne saw his second-half penalty saved by Filip Stankovic.
This defeat is particularly significant as it is Napoli's first loss to Venezia in Serie A since March 1942. The result leaves Massimiliano Allegri’s side in ninth place, with the manager facing growing pressure following a disjointed performance that failed to overcome a side that had lost all six of their previous league fixtures.
