Napoli and Roma fought to a pulsating 3-3 draw at the Stadio Maradona in a Serie A encounter defined by high intensity and individual brilliance. Scott McTominay was the standout performer for the home side, netting two goals to keep his team in the hunt throughout the afternoon.
A battle of resilience
The hosts took the lead in the 28th minute through an acrobatic bicycle kick from Franck Zambo Anguissa. McTominay doubled the advantage shortly after the break, heading home from a Matteo Politano cross to make it 2-0. However, Roma showcased their trademark grit, clawing their way back into the match through a Matías Soulé strike and a goal from Leonardo Balerdi.
McTominay restored Napoli's lead in the 83rd minute with a powerful effort from outside the box, seemingly clinching the win. Yet, the drama reached its peak in the 89th minute when Balerdi secured his brace to equalize for the visitors. The goal sparked significant controversy, as Napoli players protested a potential foul on Sam Beukema in the buildup, but the VAR check upheld the decision.
The final moments were marked by chaos, culminating in the dismissal of Roma boss Massimiliano Allegri. Despite the frustration of dropping points, both sides provided a spectacle that underscored the competitive nature of this season's Serie A campaign.
