Lionel Messi makes history with consecutive MLS Golden Boot awards

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi becomes the first player in MLS history to win the Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons after a prolific 26-goal campaign.
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has etched his name further into the record books of Major League Soccer. The 39-year-old has officially become the first player in the history of the league to win the Golden Boot award in two consecutive seasons.
Messi’s dominance this year was evident in his statistics, as he netted 26 goals in just 31 appearances. This tally placed him four goals clear of his closest challenger, Peter Musa of FC Dallas, and five ahead of Nashville’s English striker Sam Surridge. By claiming the trophy again, Messi becomes only the sixth player to win the award twice, joining a select group that includes former Charlton and Southampton forward Bradley Wright-Phillips.
A record-breaking season
The Argentine’s impact extended far beyond just scoring. He also provided 17 assists throughout the campaign, bringing his total goal contributions to 43. For the second year in a row, this represents the highest combined total of goals and assists for any player in the league. This achievement is particularly notable as Messi retired from international football with Argentina earlier this year to focus on his club career.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is now eyeing even more history. Having already secured the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award in 2024 and 2025, he is in a position to become the first-ever three-time winner of the league’s top individual prize. His previous MVP seasons were marked by team silverware, with Miami winning the Supporters' Shield in 2024 and the MLS Cup in 2025.
Despite Messi's individual heroics, Inter Miami struggled for consistency in the Eastern Conference standings. They finished the regular season 17 points behind conference leaders Nashville. The team must now regroup for the post-season, where they are set to face Columbus Crew in a three-game series in the opening round of the MLS Cup play-offs, which are scheduled to begin later this month.
