Man City Financial Whistleblower Stays Under Protection

Portuguese authorities have suspended the removal of Rui Pinto from witness protection following his role in exposing Manchester City's financial records.
Rui Pinto, the computer hacker behind the Football Leaks platform, will remain under witness protection for the time being. Portuguese authorities have reversed a decision to terminate his inclusion in the security programme after it was determined that he had not been properly notified of the grounds for his removal or given a fair chance to contest it.

Pinto, 37, gained international attention in 2018 for leaking confidential documents that sparked investigations into Manchester City’s financial practices. These records eventually led to the Premier League finding the club guilty of numerous breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, a verdict the club is currently appealing.
The Ministry of Justice in Portugal has granted Pinto 10 days to review a risk assessment that claims his safety is at low risk. Pinto had previously warned that ending his protection would place him in a dangerous situation. While he has been convicted of data-related offences in Portugal, he continues to advocate for his status as a whistleblower who provided essential evidence to sports authorities.
