Lionel Messi is preparing for his final international match as Argentina hosts Benin in Buenos Aires. The legendary forward, who confirmed his retirement following the 2026 World Cup, will make his last appearance for the national team at the Estadio Monumental.
A historic career concludes
Messi leaves the international stage with a remarkable record of 207 caps and 125 goals. His tenure included winning the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles. Reflecting on his decision, the 39-year-old stated, "I've given it my all, I have nothing left to give."
The friendly match against Benin serves as a celebratory farewell for the icon. While he previously retired in 2016, his return led to a golden era under coach Lionel Scaloni, who built a squad that maximized Messi's influence.
