Kai Rooney Steps Up to Manchester United U21s in Nottingham Forest Clash

Wayne Rooney’s 16-year-old son, Kai, made his debut for Manchester United’s Under-21 side in a Premier League 2 match against Nottingham Forest.
Wayne Rooney’s son, Kai, reached a new milestone in his developing career by making his first appearance for Manchester United’s Under-21 side. The 16-year-old featured in a Premier League 2 fixture on Friday night, though the result did not go in favor of the young Red Devils.
The match took place at Loughborough University Stadium against Nottingham Forest. With the scores level at 2-2, Kai was introduced as a substitute in the 77th minute. However, the momentum shifted quickly, as Forest found a winner through Shakur Samuels just minutes after the teenager entered the field, resulting in a 3-2 defeat for United.
Following in Famous Footsteps
At just 16, Kai is the same age his father was when he made his iconic Premier League breakthrough with Everton. While Wayne Rooney eventually became United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals and won five league titles, his son is now carving his own path through the academy system. This U21 debut follows Kai's previous experience with the U19s in the UEFA Youth League against Atletico Madrid.
The young forward has been rising through the ranks after a successful stint with the U16s last season. His progression was recently rewarded with a two-year apprenticeship signed in July. According to media reports, this agreement will eventually transition into a three-year professional contract worth approximately £50,000 per year.
The game itself saw plenty of action before Rooney's arrival. Fuad Ayorinde Smith opened the scoring for Forest, but United captain Dan Armer equalized from the penalty spot. Samuel Lusale then put United ahead, only for Smith to level again with his own penalty before the final winning goal.
Kai shared his excitement for the match on social media prior to kick-off, posting a photo of his jersey in the locker room.
