Manchester United Starlet JJ Gabriel Closes in on Real Madrid Move After Bitter Standoff

16-year-old JJ Gabriel is set to join Real Madrid after going AWOL to force an exit from Manchester United.
16-year-old JJ Gabriel is on the verge of joining Real Madrid after a turbulent and high-profile departure from Manchester United. The youngster, who went AWOL from the English club back in September, has been training in Spain while waiting for the final details of his transfer to be resolved.
Gabriel's decision to leave Old Trafford stems from growing frustration over his path to the first team. Despite joining United's academy in 2022, he felt his elevation to senior football was progressing too slowly. To force the move, he enlisted the help of prominent agent Ali Barat. While European giants like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain all showed interest, the teenager ultimately chose to play under Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu.
The move has sparked a significant dispute between the two clubs. United are reportedly considering legal action to secure compensation far beyond the standard £100,000 to £300,000 fee usually mandated by FIFA. As of now, the Red Devils claim they have not even been contacted by Real Madrid, despite reports that the Spanish side has prepared a three-year contract worth over £850,000 per season.
A Dream and a Warning
Gabriel, who holds an EU passport due to his Irish and Cypriot heritage, recently spoke about his ambitions during an interview with a Spanish newspaper in Madrid.
"My dream is to win the Ballon d'Or."

However, Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has expressed concerns about the teenager's haste to leave. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel, Giggs emphasized the massive jump from youth level to the Premier League or La Liga.
"You have to have that patience that people just don't seem to have at the moment."

Due to registration restrictions, Gabriel will not be able to feature in the Youth League this season. Instead, he is expected to join Real Madrid's reserve team, Castilla. A formal announcement of the deal is likely to wait until the January transfer window opens.
