Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher has avoided bankruptcy after settling an unpaid tax bill with His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). A bankruptcy petition, which had been issued against the 48-year-old in August, was dismissed by Judge Nicholas Briggs at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday, October 13.
Financial matter resolved
Kevin Hassan, representing HMRC, confirmed to the court that the outstanding fees had been paid in full. While no specific figure was disclosed during the hearing, reports had previously estimated the debt to be between £700,000 and £800,000. Following the payment, the legal proceedings against the former footballer have officially concluded.
When the petition was first made public months ago, a representative for Carragher indicated the situation was a private matter that would be handled promptly. They stated at the time: > "This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it." — Carragher's Spokesperson
