Olivier Giroud: 'The United States is not a football country'

Olivier Giroud has opened up about his decision to leave LAFC, claiming the US lacks the football passion found in Europe.
Olivier Giroud has shared his candid thoughts on his time in Major League Soccer, suggesting that the United States does not fit his vision of a traditional football nation. The 40-year-old striker, who joined Los Angeles FC in September 2024, parted ways with the club in June 2025 after less than a year in the league.
During his stint in California, the Frenchman made 38 appearances across all competitions, contributing five goals and three assists. While he experienced success on the pitch, including a 2024 US Open Cup victory and a runner-up finish in the Leagues Cup, the environment ultimately failed to capture his interest.

Now back in his home country playing for Lille, Giroud explained that he struggled to find the intensity he was accustomed to throughout his European career. He noted that he missed the fervent atmosphere and high-stakes competition that define the sport across the Atlantic.
"On the football front, it wasn't really for me."

LAFC has since moved on, currently sitting sixth in the Western Conference. The team's attack is now spearheaded by Son Heung-min and Denis Bouanga as they continue their campaign.
