Gareth Southgate Hints at Permanent Retirement from Football Management

Former England boss Gareth Southgate admits he no longer enjoys the pressure of winning and may never return to a managerial role.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has suggested that his days in the dugout might be over for good. More than two years after stepping down from his role with the national team, the 56-year-old revealed he is currently uninterested in returning to the high-pressure world of football management.
Southgate’s eight-year tenure with the Three Lions was marked by significant success, including leading the team to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. He originally took over from Roy Hodgson in 2016 and eventually resigned following England's loss to Spain at Euro 2024. Since then, he has been replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who guided the national side to another semi-final appearance during the summer of 2026.
A Shift in Priorities
Despite being linked with several high-profile positions, including the Manchester United job, Southgate appears to have moved on. He explained that during the final stages of his England career, he stopped finding joy in the game. He noted that even victories only provided a fleeting sense of satisfaction, leading him to distance himself from the sport almost entirely. His recent attendance at the FA Cup final to witness Crystal Palace win their first trophy was a rare visit to a stadium.
"I don't see a scenario where I do that."

Since leaving his post, Southgate has embraced a variety of new roles. He has served as a technical observer for UEFA and has taken on a position as a visiting lecturer at the prestigious Harvard Business School. His recent experiences have also included filming a documentary for the BBC and traveling globally to study leadership in different sectors.
"I've loved the last 18 months of my life."

The former Middlesbrough boss also shared his thoughts on the recent legal battles within the Premier League. Following the verdict that found Manchester City guilty of numerous financial regulation breaches, Southgate expressed concern for the sport's reputation. While the club has appealed the decision, Southgate believes the ongoing complexity of such cases leaves the entire game without a clear winner.
