The football world is in mourning following the tragic news that former Port Vale and Gillingham captain Doug Loft has died at the age of 39. According to club statements, the midfielder passed away over the weekend following a sudden medical emergency.
A distinguished career
Loft, who began his professional journey at Brighton & Hove Albion after emerging from non-League side Hastings United, enjoyed a long career in the EFL. He is best remembered for his five-year stint at Port Vale, where he made 196 appearances and was named the club's Player of the Season for 2011-12. Under the guidance of manager Micky Adams, he captained the side to promotion from League Two.
"No one could have been prouder to have captained the club."
Micky Adams
Following his time in Burslem, Loft moved to Gillingham, where he also served as captain. His career also included spells at Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, and Dagenham & Redbridge, before his final stint with Tonbridge Angels.
"Life is so short a former teammate passed away and literally only couple of years between us. 39 is way too young."
Leon Legge
Both Port Vale and Gillingham have expressed their deepest condolences to Loft’s wife, Laura, and their children, Freya and Amelie. Port Vale has requested permission from the EFL to wear black armbands and hold a minute's silence during their upcoming match against Chesterfield to honor his memory.
