Donnarumma restrained after tunnel confrontation with Liverpool fans at Anfield

Gianluigi Donnarumma had to be led away by Manchester City staff after a heated exchange with Liverpool supporters following a 3-0 victory.

Manchester City’s emphatic 3-0 win over Liverpool was marred by a post-match altercation involving Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper had to be escorted away by club officials following a verbal confrontation with home supporters in the tunnel area at Anfield.

Footage of the incident shows the shot-stopper engaging with the crowd while heading toward the dressing rooms. While Donnarumma appeared to be smiling at the remaining fans, he was met with hostile chants of "cheats" from the Liverpool faithful. The tension was palpable as staff members intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.

The hostility from the stands was fueled by recent news regarding Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League. Following an independent commission's guilty verdict on financial breaches, rival supporters have expressed frustration over the club's sporting integrity. During the match, fans displayed banners suggesting that City should be stripped of honors won between 2009 and 2018.

Tension over financial verdict

On the pitch, Enzo Maresca’s side capitalized on a major turning point when Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch was sent off with a red card. Erling Haaland opened the scoring shortly after, before Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki added late goals to secure a dominant victory for the visitors.

Despite the success, the atmosphere surrounding the club remains heavy due to the off-field legal developments. The Premier League has previously characterized the club's financial dealings as involving "sham" contracts, a sentiment echoed by the vocal crowd at Anfield throughout the afternoon.

"Because of the situation, the noise will always be there so we need to learn how to deal with it."

The victory provides some relief for Maresca, who praised his squad's togetherness during a difficult period. However, the day was less successful for Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz, who faced harsh criticism from Jamie Carragher. The pundit suggested the German midfielder should be dropped, noting a lack of goal threat after 60 appearances for the club.
