Dirk Kuyt named Fenerbahce interim boss ahead of Liverpool reunion

Fenerbahce have turned to a familiar face to lead the club through a turbulent period. Dirk Kuyt, the former Netherlands forward, has been appointed as the interim head coach following the sudden departure of Ismail Kartal. The move comes at a critical juncture for the Turkish giants as they prepare for high-stakes fixtures both domestically and in Europe.

The managerial change was triggered by Kartal’s resignation on Monday. His departure followed a disappointing 2-1 loss to local rivals Galatasaray, a result that left Fenerbahce in fifth place in the league standings, six points adrift of the leaders. While Kartal had previously attempted to step down in September, his resignation was officially accepted this time around.

A legend returns to the spotlight

Kuyt is no stranger to the demands of the Istanbul club. During his playing career, he helped Fenerbahce secure the Turkish league title in the 2013-14 season. Since June 2026, the 46-year-old had been serving as an assistant to Kartal, making him the natural choice to step into the top role on a temporary basis.

The timing of the appointment adds a layer of drama to the upcoming Champions League schedule. On Wednesday, November 4, Kuyt will lead his team against Liverpool, the club where he spent six successful years. During his time at Anfield, the Dutchman became a fan favorite, netting 71 goals in 285 appearances and winning the League Cup in 2012.

Before the European showdown, Kuyt’s first challenge will be a domestic league match against Goztepe this Saturday. Having previously managed sides like ADO Den Haag, Beerschot, and FC Dordrecht, the interim boss brings significant experience to the dugout. The club has stated that Kuyt will remain in the position until a permanent successor is found.
