Boca Juniors face potential sanctions in Brazil over betting advertisement

Boca Juniors are facing potential legal and financial repercussions in Brazil following their recent Copa Sudamericana clash against Vasco da Gama at the Maracanã. During the match, the Argentine side wore jerseys featuring the logo of their betting sponsor, Betsson, which directly conflicts with Brazil's current legislation regarding gambling advertisements.

Regulatory conflict under the spotlight

"The prohibition applies to all clubs that play matches in Brazilian territory."

Pedro Lopes

"The fact that the sponsorship contract was signed abroad does not change this conclusion."

Eduardo Carlezzo

The controversy stems from Provisional Measure No. 1.394/2026, enacted in September, which strictly prohibits the promotion and sponsorship of fixed-odds betting within the country. Legal experts emphasize that foreign entities operating within Brazilian borders must adhere to local laws, regardless of where their commercial contracts were originally signed.

The exhibition of the betting brand during a high-profile broadcast is classified as abusive advertising. While the club maintains that their sponsorship is legal in Argentina, authorities warn that failure to comply could result in significant administrative fines or even restrictions on playing future matches in Brazil. Experts suggest this creates a complex legal clash between international commercial commitments and the strict, unilateral regulations now enforced by the Brazilian government.
