Arsene Wenger Urged to Challenge Gianni Infantino for FIFA Presidency

Senior European football figures are reportedly pushing former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to run for the FIFA presidency against incumbent Gianni Infantino.

The landscape of global football governance could be set for a major shift as reports emerge that influential European figures are encouraging Arsene Wenger to run for the FIFA presidency. This movement comes at a time when current president Gianni Infantino is preparing to seek a fourth term next year, potentially running unopposed despite growing internal friction.

Infantino’s leadership has faced intense scrutiny recently, particularly following the controversy surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This strategic plan, which proposed selling commercial stakes in the World Cup to private investors, caused a significant rift within the organization. While the project was eventually abandoned, it led to calls from leaders in Europe, North America, and Asia for Infantino to step down.

Wenger, who has served as FIFA’s head of global football development since 2019, is seen by many as a unifying alternative. The 76-year-old Frenchman is widely respected for his technical knowledge and his long, successful tenure at Arsenal. Crucially, his appeal extends beyond Europe; his time coaching in Japan and his support for African football development have earned him global standing.

A Battle of Influence

While Infantino has secured strong backing in Africa and South America by promising increased development funding, Wenger’s supporters believe he offers a more integrity-driven approach. The former manager has previously distanced himself from Infantino’s more controversial commercial schemes, asserting his belief in a transparent and independent governing body.

"I firmly believe in an independent Fifa that serves our game with commitment, transparency and integrity."

Arsene Wenger

Despite the growing calls for him to stand, Wenger’s intentions remain unclear. He was recently seen dining with Infantino in Zurich ahead of a high-stakes FIFA Council meeting. With other potential heavyweights like Aleksander Ceferin and Victor Montagliani ruling themselves out, the only other declared candidate is former defender Ramon Vega, though he is considered a long shot.

The upcoming council meeting in Zurich is expected to be a heated affair. Infantino will face questions not only on the FFE fallout but also on governance reforms and disciplinary matters, including the Folarin Balogun affair and the awarding of a peace prize to Donald Trump. Whether Wenger decides to step up and challenge his current boss remains the biggest question hanging over the organization.

"We want to see an African team win the World Cup, and the numbers show that it is feasible."
