Argentina FA takes FIFA to CAS over World Cup punishments

The AFA is heading to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA rejected appeals regarding player bans and fines from the 2026 World Cup.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced its intention to escalate its dispute with FIFA by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This move follows the governing body’s decision to reject multiple appeals regarding disciplinary actions taken against the national team and midfielder Leandro Paredes.
Disciplinary fallout following 2026 final
The sanctions stem from a series of incidents during and after the 2026 World Cup. Leandro Paredes was issued a 10-match ban following a pitch-side conflict after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the final. While teammate Nahuel Molina saw his initial suspension reduced to four games, both players were hit with $90,000 fines.
Beyond player conduct, the AFA was fined $321,000 for various breaches of FIFA's disciplinary code. These included team misconduct, discriminatory gestures by supporters, and using a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, specifically a banner regarding the Falkland Islands displayed after the semi-final against England.
The AFA confirmed that after FIFA upheld the original punishments, their next step is to formally request the reasoning behind these decisions before proceeding with the case at CAS. The aftermath of the final also involved an investigation into an on-field fracas involving Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, where players were seen clashing with Spanish opponents, including Eric Garcia and Gavi.
