CAF Confirms Africa Cup of Nations Returns to Biennial Format

The Confederation of African Football has officially reinstated the biennial schedule for the AFCON, starting with the 2027 edition.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will return to a biennial format. The decision, reached unanimously by the CAF Executive Committee, marks a shift away from plans to hold the tournament every four years.
Strategic Shift for African Football
The move follows a re-evaluation of the proposed Pan-African Nations League. CAF officials concluded that the new competition would require more time to secure the necessary financial backing to ensure the growth and competitiveness of the sport across the continent.
"The CAF Executive Committee's decision to revert to a biennial AFCON is aimed at promoting, protecting, and advancing the interests of African football."
Patrice Motsepe
CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized that this change is designed to support the 54 member associations while balancing the needs of African players based at clubs abroad. The next tournament is set to take place in 2027, hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with subsequent editions scheduled for 2029, 2031, and 2033.
CAF also noted that in accordance with FIFA regulations, the tournament will avoid clashing with World Cup years, such as the 2030 cycle. Beyond the pitch, the federation views the event as a vital cultural celebration that unites the African diaspora and fans globally.
