Global Anticipation and Eligibility Debates Ahead of 2026 Ballon d'Or

As London prepares to host the 70th Ballon d'Or ceremony, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal lead a wide-open race for football's ultimate individual prize.

The football world is turning its eyes toward the London Palladium, where the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner will be crowned this Monday. Marking the 70th anniversary of the award, the ceremony returns to the home of its inaugural winner, Stanley Matthews. This year’s race is notably open, with no runaway favorite, sparking intense debate among fans and experts alike.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has emerged as the bookmakers' frontrunner. If he secures the trophy, he will be the first Englishman to win since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane faces stiff competition from Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who was previously the favorite but has recently slipped behind the England captain in the rankings.

"I delivered a big season and winning it would be amazing. We’ll wait for Monday night."

Champions League and World Cup Impact

The eligibility period, which spans from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, places heavy emphasis on the recent World Cup and European club success. Spain’s Rodri, the World Cup Golden Ball winner, is a major contender after finding his peak form following a lengthy recovery from an ACL injury. Meanwhile, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sits as the fifth favorite. Despite a devastating injury during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League run, the Georgian was named the Champions League Player of the Season after leading PSG to continental glory.

Lionel Messi also remains in the conversation following a sentimental run to the World Cup semi-finals with Argentina. At 39, this is expected to be the eight-time winner's final appearance on the shortlist. However, critics argue that his current form in Major League Soccer should carry less weight than the achievements of those competing in Europe's elite leagues.

A significant point of contention this year is the voting structure. Under rules established in 2022, only journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations can vote for the men’s award. This has led to a paradoxical situation where Luxembourg, ranked 98th, has a representative, while India, with a population of 1.4 billion but ranked 138th, is excluded from the process.

In the women’s category, Alexia Putellas of London City Lionesses is the clear favorite to take home the prize. She leads a shortlist that includes her former Barcelona teammates Aitana Bonmati and Ewa Pajor. The ceremony, co-organized by France Football and UEFA, will be hosted by the duo of Kate Scott and Thierry Henry.
